Amy Antsler (Dever) and Molly Davidson (Feldstein) have been best friends since childhood, but they are known as pretentious by their peers. Amy has been “out” for two years and has a crush on a girl named Ryan. Molly coaxes Amy to forge a relationship with her before they graduate. The day before graduation, Molly overhears classmates talking about her in the restroom. She confronts them and says she got into Yale. They reveal that, despite partying, they too got into good colleges. Molly angrily tells Amy they should have enjoyed their time in high school more. She suggests they go to a graduation party held by a popular boy at his rich aunt’s house. Amy reluctantly agrees.
This film is much like a typical teenage buddy comedy film. It has the best friends partying, drinking, getting high, watching porn, plus there is some mild sex and a good bit of making out. This film is laugh out loud funny a few times, but mostly, it is unoriginal and too much like the majority of teen comedies. Kaitlyn Dever does a fine job as Amy and Beanie Feldstein does an equally fine job as Molly. The rest of the cast do good, not great, but that’s mostly because they aren’t very actors or actresses and their poor roles. With a better cast, this film wouldn’t have been a whole lot better, unless the script was changed almost completely.
Too me, I felt the teen typicalities kept dragging on, making me think, “Come on already!” I don’t understand the high rating or great reviews for such a stereotypical movie. I loved Kaitlyn Dever in Beautiful Boy and Beanie Feldstein in Lady Bird, so I was excited to see this one, but was very disappointed. Poor script, acting and cast. I know this is Olivia Wilde’s first directed film, so hopefully she can do better.
Looking for a teen comedy? You got it! Something different? Nope! If you want a unique teen film, then pass on this one, because it is far from anything special. It isn’t the least bit interesting and is only a tad funny. This is nothing like the great teen comedies of John Hughes. Ito isn’t smart or notable. It doesn’t deserve all the praise it’s received. Nothing about this film is fantastic. It doesn’t stand out. It’s an hour and forty-five minutes you can’t get back. Hughes would be disappointed. 18+ 2.5/5
